Responding To What’s In The Media

Are you into Vampire movies, TV shows and novels that the rest of mainstream America seems to be? How about Dancing With The Stars? Or other reality television shows? Even if these aren’t your cup of tea, they offer an excuse to pay attention to the media simply to help increase your sales and marketing ideas.

By responding to what is going on in our media obsessed, celebrity drenched society, you can leverage what the media is doing and turn the craze towards your business. Whether you are selling men’s apparel, children’s accessories or home goods, you can – and in most cases should – react to society’s media obsession at any moment. Think about how the “craze” relates to your customers, products or store, even if in a indirect way. Use this in your merchandising, store window displays, signage and special events. Turn a regular day of sales into a countdown towards opening night of a big movie or have extended hours to watch Dancing With the Stars… while shopping, of course. Offer incentives, sales and other promotional ideas that will lure your customer into your store. Use what the media is already sharing through the press as a selling tool for your business. Are Vampires all the rage? Sell things in red – it can be as simple as that. Make a special display  that corresponds with whatever the craze is and blend it into your store so that it appears seamless. Even if you think it doesn’t make sense for your business, it’s likely there are ways it can make sense.
